Amanda Swart is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biochemistry at Stellenbosch University. She teaches undergraduate courses while also managing her research program and her postgraduate students. Professor Swart has been investigating the influence of natural products on the adrenal cytochrome P450 enzymes (P450s) for a number of years. These enzymes catalyze the biosynthesis of steroid hormones – glucocorticoids (cortisol and corticosterone), mineralocorticoids (aldosterone) and adrenal androgens (androstenedione). She has devoted years to studying adrenal steroid hormone biosynthesis and the structure/function aspects of the P450s, using the baboon enzymes as her model system, linking these to the human P450s for comparative analyses.
Running alongside her interest in steroid hormones is her interest in natural plant products. The P450s are enzymes ideally suited to studies investigating the bioactivity of plant extracts and secondary plant metabolites. She is the owner of Harvesting Nutrition, a private nutrition therapy practice, and is a teacher of health and nutrition classes at the Colorado School of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Whole Foods Market, and various other venues including hospitals, corporate businesses, and non-profit organizations. Coleen is the recipient of the 2014 NANP Impact Award from the National Association of Nutrition Professionals for her work with MTHFR and methylation.

A former professional dancer, choreographer and professor, Coleen battled a brain injury, depression, chronic pain, multiple autoimmune diseases, and a slew of degenerative conditions but turned her health around with holistic nutrition. Finding out that she had the MTHFR mutation was instrumental in her recovery, and now her passion is to educate the broader community about methylation and MTHFR. She attended Nutrition Therapy Institute (NTI) in Denver, CO and is currently completing the Functional Medicine & Lab Interpretation Series with Dr. Brandon Lundell. She keeps up on the latest health and nutrition research by attending numerous medical seminars and conferences. She offers a five-hour webinar on MTHFR and methylation for healthcare practitioners, and will soon be releasing a webinar and eBook on the same subject for non-practitioners.

Catherine M. Pittman, Ph.D., HSPP, is a licensed clinical psychologist, psychology professor, and chair of the Psychology Department at Saint Mary’s College in Notre Dame, Indiana. As a practicing clinical psychologist at Roseland Counseling, Dr. Pittman also provides psychotherapy, most frequently working with those coping with anxiety, depression, and PTSD. She also is experienced in neuropsychological rehabilitation, and works with individuals who have experienced brain injuries or strokes. Along with Elizabeth Karle, she authored Extinguishing Anxiety, a book that assists individuals in overcoming the difficulties associated with anxiety disorders. The two are currently writing a second book, Rewire Your Anxious Brain, for New Harbinger.

Dr. Pittman practices evidence-based psychotherapy, which means that she uses approaches that have been studied and shown to be effective. Her focus is on understanding how the natural processes of the brain and body can be changed in order to improve one’s life. After 20 years of experience in Cognitive Behavior Therapy and Neuropsychology, Dr. Pittman has acquired a substantial amount of knowledge about how to help people change their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. One of her goals in therapy is to help individuals understand what needs to be changed in the brain to help them accomplish the changes they seek. She is continually amazed by the fact that the brain is capable of tremendous growth, change, and healing, no matter what the person’s age, and knows that, while medication can be useful, it is not always necessary to promote change. Her research on benzodiazepines was inspired by her growing awareness of individuals with anxiety disorders who were relying on these medications to cope with anxiety, and the lack of resources available for those who were interested in using alternate methods but had difficulty stopping the use of benzodiazepines.
