One of the keys among them must be how to retain your guard, even when your opponent is putting you under incredible pressure and stress.

Guard retention, at its core, is so key to success in jiu-jitsu. We all know the guard is one of BJJ’s most important tools, and keeping an active threat at all times from your back is foundational to your success. So, then, keeping your guard must be one of the fundamental tools that you have. The better your guard retention, the better your jiu-jitsu, simple as that. Now, with this series, you can explore this concept in depth, benefiting from John’s years of study.

3 Positions Of Guard Retention In Jiu Jitsu

This series will focus on three major positions from where we must fight to retain the guard. By combining all three, you can gain a much fuller understanding of the heuristic system that the Danaher athletes use at the highest levels of competition. Those positions:

Seated Guard: Learn how to move from a seated position when under danger, using wedges, hip escapes, heists, and rolls to create space and get back to a comfortable guard.

Supine Guard: When laying down, see the important details behind what can make your guard a nightmare to pass, including the little details behind weaving your legs in that everyone gets wrong, and the right ways to position your arms and legs to get back.

Turtle Position: A good guard retention must include the turtle position, so find out exactly when to go to the turtle, what to do once you are there, and how to dynamically combine this into your game for seamless reguarding.

By combining all three positions in the right way, you can unlock their full potential for offense and defense. Work the smart way, not the hard way, and anyone of any skill level can learn the proper approach from one of the world’s best coaches.
