Trauma has always been with us, but has been on the rise in recent years. As terrorism continues to grow it becomes imperative to truly understand the intricacies of this mental health disorder. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) has been known by many names in the past. Soldier’s Heart ( Civil War ), Shell Shock, Battle Fatigue, Gulf War Syndrome are but a few. In essence Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is delayed grieving due to an overwhelming trauma or stress. It can also be caused by numerous less severe traumas experienced over time. Statistics regarding this illness indicate that approximately 7%-8% of people in the United States will likely develop PTSD in their lifetime, with the lifetime occurrence in combat veterans and rape victims ranging from 10% to as high as 30%. New treatment modalities have been discovered in the past 20 years that help to relieve PTSD quickly and with much less painful emotion than more conventional therapies.
