Programme
Session 1
Neurological Trauma – Fixing the Broken in a Practical Manner
Trauma to cats and dogs which causes injury to the brain and or spinal cord is common enough to cause a practical problem for us in veterinary medicine. Both areas of the CNS may be involved as a result of the trauma but evaluations and treatment strategies often differ. In these sessions, we will separate brain injury and spinal injury so that we can clearly describe the underlying pathophysiology, the resulting clinical signs, the evaluation techniques, treatment strategies and prognostic indicators. We will practically approach both types of injury so that you will be able to quickly and easily handle these cases.
What you’ll learn:
- How intracranial pressure is dealt with by the brain
- How we clinically and neurologically assess brain injury patients
- What the logical treatment options are for brain injury patients
- What the prognosis is for dogs with brain injury
- How spinal cord injury patients should be evaluated
- What are the prognostic factors that help us assess spinal cord injury patients
- What treatment strategies should be used for patients with spinal cord injury
Seizures – A Case Based Approach to Help with the Frustrations
Seizure activity of a chronic and acute nature will be dealt with during this session. The dog or cat with long term seizure activity but poorly responsive to first line therapy will be dealt with in the first lecture. The most recent drugs used for this condition will be explained. Status epilepticus and cluster seizures are emergency issues affecting dogs and cats and require a rapid and logical approach to treatment. We will deal with these issues in a practical step by step manner so that treatment can be addressed in the most difficult to manage cases in practice.
What you’ll learn:
- What are the criteria used to consider an animal as refractory to first line seizure therapy
- What are the drug options used for a chronic refractory seizure case
- How should the drugs used for maintenance seizure therapy be used in dogs and cats
- What are the alternate treatment options for refractory seizure cases
- What are the pathophysiological effects of status epilepticus on the body and brain
- What are the first line drugs to be used in status and how should they be used
- What are the second drugs to be used in status and how would they be used
- What at home treatment recommendations exist for those animals that have cluster seizures
Inflammation and the CNS – How to Approach When Tests Don’t Help
Meningitis, encephalitis and myelitis are all forms of inflammatory disease affecting the central nervous system. The causes can simply be divided into those which are infectious and those which are immune mediated. The terminology can be confusing as can their diagnosis. This session will clarify the the infectious and immune mediated variants of CNS inflammation, the clinical signs that can be seen, the diagnostic tests which can be helpful and the treatment options that exist.
What you’ll learn:
- The clinical presentation of CNS inflammatory diseases
- The diagnostic tests which confirm inflammatory disease is affecting the CNS
- The specific diagnosis of CNS inflammation
- The infectious causes of CNS inflammation
- What does immune mediated CNS inflammation mean
- How to treat CNS infections
- How to treat CNS immune mediated disease
