Description
Description:
Dr. Szasz will present a brief historical review of drug controls in the United States; a critical analysis of the transformation of the trade in drugs from a free market at the beginning of the century to a tightly statist system of controls today; and a market-oriented analysis of the "drug problem."
Educational Objectives:
- To present the political-economic context of the trade in drugs: i.e., by what means are various drugs available, or not available, in our society today
- To provide a free-market analysis of drug abuse (drug addiction) as a social problem, identify the incentives that define the "problem" as a disease," and indicate some of the highly problematic consequences of the War on Drugs
- To offer a critical – moral and political – perspective on the War on Drugs and the lessons this contemporary crowd madness holds for a better understanding of the true nature and function of all types of psychotherapy and psychopathology
