Hi, I’m Andrew Warner, and here’s one of the most fundamental things I’ve learned as a serial entrepreneur…

Getting in at the right time is one of the most powerful advantages in building a successful business.

How do I know? I’ve done it before.

All my life I wanted to own a business, and by the time I graduated from college I couldn’t wait to get started.

In 1998, two years after I graduated from college, I started an email newsletter company with my brother. 

It was still the early days of at-home computers and less than half of Americans "went online" in 1998. (1) But businesses were starting to realize they could use email to grow their customer lists and sell products. 

So we built a huge audience of email subscribers who signed up to get a daily newsletter about their favorite topics or the latest news. They were getting the content they wanted to read, and companies were willing to pay us a lot of money to advertise in them. 

It wasn’t an earth shattering business idea, in fact it was the exact model newspapers had used for centuries, we just applied it to email. 

The key was that we hit on something that was growing before people recognized how fast it was going to grow. 

And once we started to see traction, we kept at it, and kept at it, and kept at it.  

By my mid-20s our company reached $38.5 million in annual sales and our office took up an entire floor of a Manhattan high rise building. 

I’ll never forget the day my college friend Michael came to visit our offices and couldn’t believe the entire 12th floor was our company.

He said “Woah, you’re so lucky. You got into email back when it was easy.” 

And I said, “Michael, I told you about it back then!”  

The difference was that I was optimistic and took action and he stood back and was cynical, saying it wasn’t going to work. 

Eventually, my brother and I sold that company and in the early 2000’s and I started a company called Mixergy, where I interviewed successful startup founders about how to grow businesses. Initially I hosted the interviews at live, in-person events.  

But then, in 2008 I realized I could reach way more people by posting them online as podcasts.  

If I would have told you about this project at the time, there’s a good chance you would have said, “what’s a podcast?” (2)

Because I interview people in the startup and tech spaces day in and day out, and invest in them as well, I’ve been excited about chatbots for years.

Seriously, I invested in the first major VC-backed chatbot startup.

So what exactly is a chatbot?

Say you’re on the website of a local yoga studio and they’re offering a free beginner’s guide to yoga. You click the button to get the guide and a conversation opens up in Facebook messenger right away.

It says welcome (your real name since it’s tied to your Facebook account), can I send you the free guide? 

With a single button you can say yes and you get your free guide. 

Then the best part…the business starts a 1-on-1 conversation with you. You see fun, short messages with easy buttons you can click to continue the conversation and the chatbot responds to you. 

The business gets to learn what you’re interested in, they can share content and teach you things, answer your questions, and ultimately turn you into a customer. 

And it’s all happening through an automated chatbot that you can set up in under and hour. 

Remember, people like using messenger. They like having real conversations and the messages aren’t buried underneath an avalanche of competing emails. I know because I’ve seen it myself. 

When I first tested chatbots out back in 2016 in my own business, Mixergy, we were blown away by how successful they were.  

We were seeing 82% open rates (3.5X higher than our emails) and 33% click-through rates (28X higher)! Pretty much any marketer’s dream. 

Then we started teaching a few students in a private group how to build their own chatbots and they got amazing results too. While 80%+ open rates were on the higher end, most people were seeing over 50% open rates with their chatbot messages.

Compare that with the average email open rate of about 20%, according to MailChimp. (6)
